Urgent care or Emergency? Getting the right health care services

The following are the health care options available in Manitoba, plus some additional resources you can access to help keep you healthy and disease-free:

Nurse Call Centre 24/7

Health Links-Info Santé is a Nurse Call Centre that is open 24/7. It is a free resource you can consult anytime, anywhere in Manitoba. You can ask experienced and knowledgeable nurses about health care questions and get the proper guidance that you need. Call 204-788-8200 in Winnipeg or 1-888-315-9257 toll-free elsewhere in the province.

Walk-In Clinics

When you have health care needs and your regular health care provider or family doctor is not available, go to Walk-In Connected Care or Walk-In Clinics when you’re in Winnipeg and QuickCare clinics in Steinback and Selkirk. These are staffed by nurse practitioners, physician assistants and registered nurses and are usually open during times when most other clinics are closed.

Urgent care centre

For non-life threatening medical emergencies that need urgent care such as injuries, cuts and bruises from minor accidents, you can go to hospitals with urgent care centres. They are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to health assessment and treatment, patients also have access to diagnostic testing and other health care disciplines such as social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, pharmacy and respiratory therapy.

Better home care

The Manitoba Home Care Program is the oldest comprehensive, province-wide, universal home care program in Canada. Established in 1974, it is available to all Manitobans of all ages, based on assessed need. The Home Care Program is perfect for those who need ongoing health services or help with activities of daily life but don’t require care in a hospital or a personal care home. Free cancer treatment drugs

The Manitoba Home Cancer Drug program offers certain drugs at no cost. Patients managed by CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB), Community Cancer Program Network, or community oncologists affiliated with CCMB are eligible. Enrolment is managed through CCMB. Do you have trouble getting your kids to eat during meal times? Or are you unsure whether a new weight-loss diet plan you read in a magazine will be good for you? Family doctor finder

The Family Doctor Finder online tool can assist in finding the best doctor for you. You can register online or via phone (the contact centre is open between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday thru Friday).

Access Centres

Access Centres in Winnipeg and Brandon offer more than health care services. Aside from front line health care from physicians or nurse practitioners, they offer assistance with mental health, home care, and employment needs. They also have income assistance programs. The services vary from community to community, so check with your nearest Access Centre first for more information.
