Have you tried informal language training?

Did you know that it can help you improve your skills faster, even if you’re already in a formal English class?

What is informal language training?

Informal language training is not structured like a formal class. You can learn at your own speed. Sometimes, a teacher will help you. Other times, you will learn on your own. You might learn in a classroom or with a group of people. It’s more flexible than formal language training. One difference is that there are no tests or grades at the end.

Examples of informal learning activities include conversation circles, book clubs, drop-in sessions, self-study activities using media resources like TV, movies, YouTube channels, apps and other means.

If you are just starting to learn a language, informal training can be helpful. It gives you more chances to practice. If you already know the language well, you can still improve by doing activities that focus on areas where you need more practice.

Here are 5 ways informal language learning can help you:

  1. Boosts confidence

Informal classes let you practice your skills without being graded. You can learn without feeling embarrassed or scared of making mistakes.

  2. Helps you learn faster

Informal classes reinforce what you learn in formal classes. You can try different strategies and learn at your own pace. You can even learn online during breaks or while traveling.

  3. Provides practice

Practice is important to be good at any language. Informal classes give you a chance to speak and try out new vocabulary. You can also listen and observe others to improve your skills.

  4. Learn in context

Informal classes teach you how to use language in real-life situations. You can learn from others’ experiences and use casual English when speaking to your peers.

  5. Entertaining and social

Informal classes are fun and relaxed. You can improve your social skills by joining group learning.

There are many informal language training programs that are free for newcomers to Manitoba. You can learn more about them from this article: Types of language training programs for newcomers to Canada .
