Supports for entrepreneurs in Manitoba

Thinking of putting up a small business but need help to start? Whether you need information about business development or financing support, there are several agencies in Manitoba that can help you.

The basics

Your first stop to learning more about the process of starting a business is the Government of Canada’s Immigrant Entrepreneurs page. Here, you will learn everything from making a business plan to accessing financing support. Pre-arrivals will also benefit from learning about visa programs for entrepreneurs or self-employed immigrants.

Programs for newcomers to Canada

SEED Winnipeg
This non-profit agency assists low-income groups through various services. Their Asset-Building programs, in particular, provide not only financial assistance but training and guidance to ensure their clients’ financial success. SEED’s Individual Development Account program is a “matched saving program” which means that participants’ savings are matched 3:1 by SEED up to specified limit. Its Newcomer Business and Enterprise Support and Training, on the other hand, provides a phase by phase structure that guides newcomer entrepreneurs how to launch their own business. Self-Employment Training Program (YMCA-YWCA Winnipeg)
This is a free program that provides entrepreneurs coaching during the planning, launch and operations stage of the business. They also receive most supports that they may need while putting up their business venture including EI benefits or Living Allowance. All trainers and coaches are self-employed business owners who share their expertise. Check the page for eligibility requirements.

Conseil de développement économique des municipalités bilingues du Manitoba (CDEM)
The Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities has been working for the economic development in the province’s bilingual communities for two decades now. The organization offers a wide range of services to Francophone and Francophile business people who want to capitalize on bilingualism in their enterprise. Among their services include assistance for business plan development, marketing strategies, access to capital, as well as training on the areas of taxation, finances, marketing, and import and export laws.

Women’s Enterprise Centre of Manitoba
Essential resources such as training and one-on-one consultations on management, marketing and financial analysis are offered to entrepreneurial women in Manitoba. The centre’s team of successful entrepreneurs and professionals provide guidance, whether you are a novice or experienced businesswoman. They also hold seminars and events to help you gain the necessary skills to develop your business acumen and facilitate networking among entrepreneurs.

This is an information hub that offers everything you need to know about starting a business in the province. Learn about tax credits and programs on the page.

Manitoba Marketing Network
The organization offers networking events as well as training workshops on marketed-related topics including Branding, Social Media, Advertising and Promotions, Sales, Customer Service and others.
